No change please, we are French

It is not what comes to our mind when we think of Paris. Huge number of youths on streets, tear gas, police using guns shooting indelible inks and closure of Eiffel tower. This was the last tuesday in Paris with live images beamed across the globe. It was the biggest demonstration by the French students, trade union workers and also employees of Air France after the May, 1968 revolt. This comes right after the suburban riots by unemployed immigrant youths couple of months back.

France seems to be hogging the European news space for one reason or other. The students participating in the student were spurting out vitriol for the government of Prime Minister Dominique de Villlepin. Those participating in the strike are comparing themselves with the demonstrators of 1968 riot. On a closer look there is nothing common between them except the demonstrations. Students and trade union workers were demonstrating for change in 1968 and the present one is to stop change.

The controversy started with Prime Minister De Villepin bringing a new law which would allow employers to easily hire and fire workers under the age of 26 years for two years. The labour laws in France are very rigid and each job comes with life time guarantee and loads of social benefits. It is impossible for any employer to fire their workers even if they go bust. This has made things so difficult for French employers, already under intense competitive pressure due to globalization, that they are not hiring new workers and so jobs are not created. The average unemployment in France is around 22% while the European average would be around 6 to 7%. This new law is supposed to allow employers have flexible labour policy which in turn will create more jobs.

The would be workers in France still demand life time secure job with all sort of benefits like under 40 work hours per week, health care and generous pension benefit. This was all made possible with the capitalism in France which made them one of the richest countries of world and housed many of world best corporations. The sphere of influence of capitalism which was extended from North America to Western Europe has shifted since then. This shift has put shining jewels of that era of capitalism of that era under intense pressure from agile enterprises of new era of capitalism. These enterprises have access to cheap labour, flexible labour policies and less focus on social sector spending. The student population of France is still not able to comprehend this important change and they are resisting it. They don’t understand that the present threat is not to the benefits but the very job which gives them these benefits.

All this has put much at stake for the political leadership of France which should rise to the occasion and not adopt an evasive approach as it has been doing. Prime minister should not capitulate to the demonstrators though it is not easy. If he backs off then France will have to face more problems in future.

There is nthing new ... ppl always resist change...prime reason being is short-sightedness. they miss the long term benifits and only see whats in for them in coming months or year. Well the same is true for India too.

Abhinav - You are true, people do resist change. But I don't know why the French youth are not able to comprehend the situation. Unemployment is so high, businesses are getting busted and total discontment.

Top of all this, the new law is applicable only for those under 26 and that too in their first two years of employment.

On the other hand, the hostility to new era of capitalism and globalisation is understandable.

Well its not abt youth .. it is the "other" picture that may be painted by the unions..i am just guessing...as these are most prevalent in India

Abhinav - You are true. It surely seems to be the other picture painted by Union and also a bit of unease in the general population of France.

Akanksha - Actually labour laws were/are rigid in almost all developed countries and comes with load of benefits.

Other things you have heard about France/Paris are true as well and yeah in those things they are casual....

    Mowgli - eeehoa, eeehoa

Raj - haha, that's correct. Masses do get carried away.

Yeah CAS is a good example but if DTH is made popular then everyone will have CAS and get out of the clutches of cable operators.

Sher - No, I am still in Finland. But as I said, these days France is hogging the limelight :) and I do make a stop in Paris everytime I go to India or come from there.

Well even i believe that its right move by govt. , finally they did sumthing right but pplz r like amitabh bachchan of mohabatein "I DON'T LIKE CHANGES" .. :D .
And i don't think that changes made r always right even in india may b all coz of bad politics, well frm student thing i can rem 1 change indian govt. made that was reservation for SC/ST or something like that. Things like that r not gud enough for everyone's benefit.
As i m not much into politics can u tell me wats CAS and DTH ??? :D

Killer - What you say makes sense. People do resist change. In the case of France coupled with 'change' there are other issues like 'nationalism' and 'capitalism'.

Well CAS is conditional access system, it is like meter for your TV and DTH is Direct to Home satellite TV connection. You have small dish which you can put near on your window and get the TV signals without the need of any cable operator.

What is happening is indeed sad not to mention futile.I am eager to know how the current government is going to handle the situation.

very well written, I must say.
I dont know much about what exactly are the steps taken by the French government but one intelligent way should be to create awareness slowly and change the laws slowly...slow enough to be accepted by and understood by the people.

EU - Infact it is sad, the colleges and universities are closed for a month now. Even today a massive protest is planned. The bill has become a law but it is suspended for the time being. I might do a post on that.

Koi - Nice to see you here. France is totally different country from other European Nations. You know a country formed out of revolutions but this time I am not sure if the participants are agreeing to what thye are doing.

Mowgli - majak udhate ho ...:D

After reading your post and abt the conditions, one thing became more clear than ever. All human constructs are filled with fallacies.
No system is better or worse in the long run. I think its futile blaming the students or the government. Both will do well to rise above for some time and look at the problem from outside. They will realise that its all a part of a quagmire---the world we live in.

I think a good way of looking at the problem wud be to look at it behaviourally and detaching any economic or political term like capitalism etc to it

  • At 2:40 PM, Blogger greensatya said…

Sher - That's a new dimension you are bringing into the debate. Well the actions can be explained by the behaviourial theory but the immediate reason for it are those economic terms such as capitalism. The behavourial theory can be used to explain the reacion of the people.

    Hope I am making sense.
