India bans AXN

These days the Indian political establishment is quite busy watching television. So while our Finance Minister speaks about reality shows, the venerable, honorable ‘Information & Broadcasting’ minister bans the action channel AXN.

I have not seen Indian television for many years now, but what I gathered from media is that our minister was offended by a program aired by AXN, the “World’s Sexiest Commercials”. This proved too much for the taste of our minister and prompt came the order. Honestly, I am less surprised and more disgusted by the attitude of our successive ‘Information & Broadcasting’ ministers.

The minister termed the programs on the channel as “against good taste or decency and are likely to affect public morality”. He thinks it is against the Indian culture to have such shows on our television. If the minister thinks that Indian culture is threatened by so much as a pair of breast, then he should rethink on what he is trying to save? He talks about public morality, the same morality which was in full display when a girl was molested by the crowd in the most ‘public’ place of India, ‘Gateway of India’ in Mumbai. The same public morality, which he must be seeing, everyday, as he drives his car on the streets of Delhi. Crowds gathered across the world to welcome New Year and where no girl was molested; they don’t have public morality, so they can see AXN. The Indians can’t, because we have a hero, a savior of our public morality and culture.

If the minister’s taste is offended then he should switch off the TV and take a hike. Average Indians are not imbecile to be not able to decide what is good or bad for them. We haven’t given this right to our ministers. If the wants to be such a minister, then he can take a plane ride to Afghanistan. Same as his colleague in previous government did, and whose Broadcasting minister he is trying to emulate. Otherwise don’t try to be our moral guardian and cut back on hypocrisy, please!

Totally right.I guess we have that amount of brain to decide by our selves as what to watch and what not to.I have also realized this so many times and planning to write a blog on this.Your post reminded me of that.

I think our politicians are not changing as fast as the rest of India. Economic freedom also sets in social transformation. It is hard for the political class in India to participate in that social transformation, having said that, I would say as the precedence suggests that the journey from “denial” to “acceptance” for any transformation has not been that difficult for Indians.

On the flip-side, a system of check-and-balance is quintessential to any free society, and it calls for a lot of wisdom to differentiate an aberrant trend or a change confined to a small group as a trend cutting across the society.

I condemn the ban on AXN…Cheers!

Sharda - Yeah, it should be left to viewer's discretion. Average Indian is better than politicians in every sense, if not in wealth. Will wait for your post.

Rio - This 'hypocrisy' is what puts me off most. And we still harp on oldest civilization, best culture, yadda, yadda..
Life is good, thanks. I am still in Finland :)

Kartik - Thanks for your comment. I was apprehensive that after you reasoning, you will say that you don't agree with my point. The whole political & executive establishment of India, still lives in colonial era. Maturity of politicians is still too much to be asked for in India.

Nobody could be angrier (Other than people over at AXN, I guess!) about this than me! The Amazing Race all-stars is to start in mid feb.

This ban is ridiculous. I've seen that show couple of times and there's nothing indecent. Most ads on it are from the 90s. I'm sure the minister would find today's actual ads much more indecent. But I guess he watches two shows at once so never really watches the ads :)

I read in today's papers that AXN has apologized. I wonder why. Why can't they fight against it once and for all? Right, they are losing money. Thats why!

    Mowgli - Yeah funny.

Kartik - Appease me ? do you think I care ? You could have put your mind that you disagree and ban is justified ! Yeah, I did know your thoughts on this subject.

Scipio - That's so correct. Politicians teaching us morality, what next ?

Raj - Yeah AXN has apologised, money rules ! if the torch bearer of ethics, Google can succumb to Chinese government, AXN did far less. The minister may be wanted to get a lease of public life by the ban controversy.

there might be chance of publicity stunt too...AXN might get a better viewership when it comes back after 3 months...

Politicians in regards to moral and ethical issues are most of the times hypocrites. They huff and puff when it comes to seeing naked breasts on TV, but when it comes to more serious issues like rape, prostitution or child molestation, just to name a few, they look away. The same with the issue of abortion. They get all loud because of a couple of cells, but they don't give a shit about the children that have been already born.

I'd like to add though, I think our society is way oversexualized. I've really become fed up with seeing naked people all the time. I for my part am not turned on anymore.

Sara - No, I don't think it was publicity stunt of AXN, they sure do have better taste than our Ministers. Won't do any such cheap tactics.

Indian cricket, the less said the better !

project - Hehe, good to see you here.

You have hit the nail on head, just as always. You don't know about Indian society, it is the most hypocrite of all. Can't agree more with the stem cell approach.

Well yeah, whats the big deal about seeing a pair of breast on TV ? but that is India, there are some self proclaimed moral guardian.

Very true, no one has problems with the profit that Oil companies have made due to ever increasing Gas prices, however the social responsibility of funding the research projects to find alternate source of energy is also part of their larger corporate responsibility. The congressional committee in US have also hauled up the CEOs of the oil companies, but from there responses it did not seem to me that any serious efforts to solve the energy problem of the world through alternative cleaner means are being made. Finding some alternate means of energy is no easy task either, I suppose a Manhattan Project like effort and resource commitment is required from the Govt.
