Fake Photographs from Middle East

Reuters after getting busted for a fake photograph of Beirut bombing has since then apologized, and taken off all the 920 pictures by that photographer from its database.

The photographer, Adnan Hajj, a freelance Lebanese photographer used to manipulate and doctor his photographs from the Israeli attack on Hezbollah. His photographs has even appeared on the front page of 'New York Times' along with 'Yahoo'.

The fraud was busted by bloggers at Little Green Football. Read the full description here. He had cloned the smokes and used digital manipulation in his picture of Israeli air strike on buildings in Beirut. Wonder how Reuters could not see such easy perceptible manipulation! Another of the photographer’s image in Reuters, showing an Israeli F-16 dropping flares was manipulated in photoshop to show three flares, instead of one.

Reuters in a statement said, “There is no graver breach of Reuters standards for our photographers than the deliberate manipulation of an image”.

A series of pictures appearing in New York Times, shows one man buried in debris (Tyre city) with not as much a speck of dust on his body. The photograph is attributed to Taylor Hicks/New York Times. On the Gateway pundit blog, an anonymous commenter further showed other pictures from New York Times, which shows the same man moving around before posing for the ‘dead man in rubbles’. Wonderful modeling assignment in a hot zone!

There are photographs of 'Qana' civilian tragedy being doctored as well, by the same Lebanese photographer appearing at Yahoo News Photo. Yahoo has since then removed those photographs but you can see them in the Little Green Football blog(Scroll down for the picture). What a good way to whip up passion!

Next time you see a picture from Middle East, of a dead man buried in the debris, or a toddler being pulled out of a destroyed building, just remember, they could be fake ones.

If we can't even trust "the news" where does it really leave us?
unethical, doctored, yellow journalism disgusts me..

Perpective Inc - Yeah, this is so sad. When one of the sides in the war is not wearing uniform then there would be no ethics, no international protocol and only false propaganda.

Where are all the journalism ethics ? The guy is expecting to much out of himself trying to bluff when the entire world is following the lebanon- israel attacks so closely. And he succeeded to some extent shows how greedy the news agencies have become. Anything to get extra attention.

Neihal - You are totally correct. The manipulation was so blatant and 'dumb', I would say. News agencies should take care, particulary, when the images are so provocative.

Mowgli - I didn't do anything. I have just posted their links.

Twilight Fairy - I won't even call it 'sensational', rather 'lame' journalism. Surprise is when 'Reuters' does this.

Yes your post is so appropriate. All the photographs are absolutely fake. There were two different pictures with abolished building in some news paper, and in front of each abolished building the woman standing is the same. In that case the woman must be the real state agent not the sufferer. And many more other fake pictures, I got to see in picture

Sharda - Yeah, I also saw that picture. These shameless acts are meant only to provoke people, and present wrong picture of the war by the terrorists.

Ipanema Girl - Worse was the fact that Reuters sold the pictutes to Yahoo, New York Times, etc. And yeah, pathetic doctoring.

Freeze - Yo, thanks for being the 20.000th reader! How shall I treat you ? Should I write a post dedicated to you or better drink a bottle of champagne on your behalf ?
    let me know.

It is not simply about journalistic ethics that we are talking here...

In this information age, propaganda can indeed win wars... What we are seeing is (probably) an example of that.

    Both.
wow, a post dedicated to me. wow!

"Wonder how Reuters could not see such easy perceptible manipulation!"
No need wonder, it is exactly what Reuters wanted to do.to make the authenticity of the barabarity of Israel doubtful. And they have partially succeeded as you have commented on the post.

"Next time you see a picture from Middle East, of a dead man buried in the debris, or a toddler being pulled out of a destroyed building, just remember, they could be fake ones."

    It is war.

  • At 10:32 PM, Blogger greensatya said…

Scipio - Yeah every war has included propaganda. It is more relevant for group of terrorist whose only objective is to whip up passion and kill innocent people.

Freeze - Yeah, will dedicate a post to you. The other one I have done.

Look_Book - Wow, I must say you really came up with such a wonderful 'conspiracy theory'. You seem to suggest that even Reuters, Yahoo and New York Times have some personal stake involved in the war.

Barbarity of Israel or a country trying to protect itself from a terrorist group ?

  • At 11:11 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

If they don't have any stake why they didn't pick "such easy perceptible manipulation!"

I mean they let themselves fooled so easily. I cannot believe.

Terror unleashed by a state is as deplorable as the terror by an army ithout uniform. Hitler's army was wearing a uniform. Remember.

Look_Book - If the whole world, all the main stream media, bloggers like me, if they are all against Hezbollah then there has to be some reason. Or that one fine morning everyone thought Hezbollah is a terrorist organisation and started condemning it.

No comparions to Hitler, but one thing you are forgetting. Hitler was an agressor, here Israel has been attacked by Hezbollah. Please check out the newspaper and find out how the present war started.

It's sad that somebody decicded to fake the photos. But at the same there should be no question of the horrors of the war. The war is as gory as those fake photos. Just because not all dead people are photographed and published, war is no less horrible and inhumane

  • At 6:27 AM, Blogger XVSA013 said…

    who won this war?

  • At 9:46 AM, Blogger XVSA013 said…

what happened to those 2 soldiers who started it all?

  • At 10:05 AM, Blogger greensatya said…

T DNA - Yeah war is horrible and it is more so when the war is deliberately started.

Mowgli - No news about the two soldiers.
